The Art of the Wall: How to Make Any Room Feel Finished

July 30, 2026

You know that feeling when a room has all the furniture it needs, but somehow it still doesn’t feel finished?

Look at the walls.

Art and wall decor are usually some of the last things people choose for a room, but they are often what bring the entire space together. The right piece can introduce color, create a focal point, add personality, and make a room feel collected rather than simply furnished.

If you have a few blank walls staring back at you and have no idea where to start, these are some of my favorite ways to approach them.

Above the Bed: Go Bigger Than You Think

The wall above a bed is one of the most important walls in a bedroom.

Because the bed is already a substantial piece of furniture, tiny artwork can easily feel lost above it. I typically prefer something with enough scale to visually connect with the bed below.

One larger statement piece creates a clean, elevated look, while two coordinating pieces can add a little more interest and symmetry.

If your headboard already has a lot of texture or personality, let it breathe. Choose artwork that complements it instead of competing with it.

The Lonely Little Wall

We all have one.

It might be the little wall between two doorways, the end of a hallway, or that narrow space next to a window that never seems to look quite right.

These smaller walls are actually some of my favorite places to have fun.

Try a smaller piece of art, a decorative wall object, or a mirror. It does not need to be a huge statement. Sometimes filling that unexpected little space is exactly what makes a home feel thoughtfully designed.

When in Doubt, Add a Mirror

Not every wall needs artwork.

Mirrors are one of my favorite design tools because they add dimension while reflecting light around a room. They can also make smaller spaces feel more open.

In a bedroom or dressing area, I love going oversized. The Maxine Floor Mirror is the type of piece that is functional but still makes a major visual statement.

In an entry or living room, a wall mirror can provide the same effect on a smaller scale.

One Statement Piece vs. A Collection

One of the biggest questions I hear is whether to hang one large piece or several smaller pieces.

There really is no wrong answer. It depends on the feeling you want.

One oversized piece feels clean, confident, and dramatic. It works beautifully over a sofa, console, bed, or fireplace.

A collection feels more layered and personal. If you love several smaller pieces, try grouping them together rather than scattering them around the room.

The trick is to make the grouping feel intentional. Look for a common thread, whether that is color, subject, frame style, or simply pieces that feel good together.

Let Your Art Choose the Palette

If you are starting a room from scratch, choose the art earlier than you think.

Artwork can actually give you the roadmap for the rest of the room.

Pull a soft blue from a painting into your pillows. Repeat a warm neutral in a throw. Pick up a tiny blush detail with an accessory across the room.

Those subtle connections are what make a space feel layered without looking overly coordinated.

Mix Art With Unexpected Pieces

Your walls do not have to be filled exclusively with framed artwork.

Mirrors, dimensional objects, sculptural pieces, and interesting wall decor can break things up and add texture. This is especially helpful in homes with open floor plans where you can see several walls at once.

Mixing different types of wall decor keeps everything from feeling too repetitive.

The Megan Molten Wall Decor collection includes artwork alongside decorative wall pieces and mirror options, making it easy to create that layered look.

Collect What You Love

More than anything, your walls should tell your story.

Do not buy art simply because you have an empty spot to fill. Wait for something that makes you stop scrolling, something that reminds you of a place you love, or simply something that makes you happy every time you walk past it.

A beautiful home is not created overnight. It is collected over time.

And sometimes, the piece that finally makes the whole room click is hanging right on the wall.

XO,
Megan
