Project Reveal: A Fresh Start

January 12, 2023

A New Year brings new beginnings and resolutions. Our client picked up and moved from the windy city during covid to start a new life in sunny Charleston. They wanted to say goodbye to the dark furniture and finishes to make room for all the light, bright coastal elements that Charleston is known for.

This home already had great bones and everything working for it. Nestled in the charming neighborhood of Old Village, a cosmetic renovation was all that was needed. A paint refresh, swapping light fixtures, and new furniture completely transformed this home into a place the clients could relax, unwind and soak up their life by the sea.

We chose a soft, refreshing color palette. Painting the rooms throughout shades of white while mixing in pops of neutral blue created that classic modern coastal look the clients desired.

An easy hardware switch from the existing, ordinary brass knobs to acrylic handles with gold accents modernize the cabinets. Making them appear sleeker. Including a Turkish vintage rug adds a pop of color and ties in the neutral blue seen throughout the house- creating a cohesive flow. Bringing in a large Alabaster Shagreen mirror with gold accents filled the wall complimenting the light blue built-ins and the hardware.

Entryway

The most important detail regarding an entryway is making it feel inviting. It is a small space but the first impression of your home. Before the renovation, the Entryway was dark and didn’t allow the beautiful natural light to come in. We first painted the walls Megan Molten White by Sherwin Williams, instantly brightening the space up. Next, we installed a modern glass chandelier, sourced a beautiful arched console, and tied everything together with a woven mirror. Pink, blues, and neutrals are all found in the vintage Turkish rug– these colors you will find throughout the rest of the home.

Living Room

The living room was the largest transformation in this home. Before renovations, the space lacked seating and felt closed off with more traditional furnishings. When selecting furniture more seating that felt relaxed and comfortable was a must.

Keeping the natural color palette in mind, we chose a large sectional paired with custom-patterned pillows. Two light blue swivel chairs add a pop of color and break the space up. Finally, new round glass lamps on each end table provide necessary lighting for the room and radiate a calming glow at night. Creating an inviting, beautiful space to accommodate the client’s friends and family.

Dining Room

We ripped out the banquet seating, repainted the walls with Megan Molten White by Sherwin Williams, and continued the color to the vaulted ceiling. Creating an allusion to a larger space. For lighting, we selected a gorgeous beaded natural-colored chandelier, the epitome of modern coastal. Lastly, the large round table utilized the space best while accommodating the client’s needs.

Finally, fresh greenery and coastal artwork revitalized the space. Giving the room a breath of fresh air that was lacking before.

Keeping the original tile floor and existing pedestal sink gave this powder bath a bit of charm. Palms found in the fun wallpaper and the driftwood-inspired mirror are both elements of the beach landscape. Bringing all the modern coastal vibes into the space.

Office

The office already had great bones! Beautiful built-ins and a terrific layout. We love to have fun in an office space and utilize bold colors. We painted the entire room Comet by Benjamin Moore, the perfect shade of blue- not too dark or vibrant.

The color is daring but does not take away from the calmness we created throughout the home. We added a modern abstract light fixture and removed the recessed lighting that can sometimes be too harsh depending on the space. Layering a cowhide rug on top of a natural jute rug creates texture and interest. I restyled the shelves with accessories from the shop while mixing in some of the client’s items. Lastly, creating a sitting area with this set of modern chairs that have a unique woven detail I fell in love with.

Primary Suite

We decided to preserve the white shiplap in the Primary Bedroom as it made sense with the rest of the home design aesthetic.

My favorite design element in this space was the ceiling grasscloth wallpaper. Grasscloth is a fabulous way to add texture to a room. It is unexpected but still understated.

Bringing in a new bed frame, a custom bench, and pillows instantly refreshed the entire space. Selecting an overall neutral rug with coastal blue accents seen throughout the home tied all the colors together. Finally, removing the ceiling fan and adding a layered, textured chandelier gave this room a touch of luxury.

Primary Bathroom Double Vanity with Soft White Finishes — Modern Coastal | Interior design by Megan Molten, neighborhood of Old Village

The Primary Bathroom was already light, bright, and airy- we kept the tile floors, bathtub, and shower. The existing chandelier we substituted for a more modern option. Removing the mirror and incorporating an abstract art piece above the tub added the wow factor I wanted to achieve. In a Powder Room, I will often add color and depth through a unique, one-of-a-kind Vintage Turkish rug. This blush and blue rug were perfect for the space. Before, the bathroom vanities were more traditional and lacked personality. Installing new mirrors and modern sconces elevated the area- a subtle yet impactful change!

Outdoor Space

Living in a relatively all-year-round warm climate a screened-in porch is a must. When designing an outdoor space, I want it to feel like an extension of the home, not separate.

Our goal was to create a space this family could entertain in for years to come. The large outdoor sofas upholstered in performance fabric are made to last. Performance fabric is by far the easiest to clean and maintain. It is my go-to for families with younger children and pets.

Completing the space with fun pillows that bring a pop of color and tons of greenery made the porch feel complete.
