Project Reveal: A Hole in One

February 7, 2023

This project was A Hole in One. The name was inspired by the putting green installed outside. Transforming this house to feel like a home was important. Incorporating funky wallpaper, coastal-inspired accessories, and new furniture refreshed this home!

This client wanted that traditional Megan Molten Modern Coastal look. Sticking to a light, bright color palette throughout the home made the space feel airy and relaxing.

Entryway

An entryway is the first impression in a home. It is the perfect space to create a moment. I always want my guests to feel welcome and warm when entering a home. Bringing in a beautiful stone table with texture details on the base gave the plain space a unique touch. Incorporating my entryway essentials- books, candles, a vintage rug, and a small box tied the area together.

These accessories are fabulous and functional. A box is a perfect place to stash away keys. Candles set the mood throughout a home, and the books look pretty while creating height and balance.

Dining Room

My favorite room in the space! I love to have fun in a Dining Room and show a little personality. Deciding to install this funky blue graffito wallpaper on the ceiling makes a statement. I brought in all the classic coastal elements through the Rattan dining chairs, a natural chandelier, art inspired by the sea, and a beaded mirror.

Creating a beautiful tablescape is such an easy way to elevate the room. A centerpiece does not have to be one item! We chose to pair two oversized candle holders from the shop alongside the Molecule vase for this centerpiece. Rattan placemats, gold-accented accessories, and linen napkins seamlessly work in the space, adding a touch of luxury.

Kitchen + Eat-In Kitchen

The heart of the home. I instantly fell in love with this open-concept kitchen. It was already white and bright, making my job easy! Updating the kitchen island accessories, barstools, and lighting fixtures are all we needed to do. Gold accents throughout mixed with natural coastal elements like the beaded chandelier created a Modern Coastal kitchen. That was cohesive with the rest of the home.

Finishing the space with a stunning Vintage Turkish Runner brought a pop of color. I love to use these rugs in a kitchen because they are so durable- perfect for any high-traffic area!

Living Room

The living room was another cosmetic renovation. We brought in two new sofas covered in a white performance fabric. I always get asked how I keep a white couch clean in a family room. Performance fabric is the secret! It is extremely durable and is so easy to clean. Making this type of fabric my go-to selection for clients with young kids.

Cleaning up the once-cluttered built-in’s was the final touch to transform this space. Creating balance and height variation throughout the shelves keeps the eye moving. I incorporated small boxes, frames, faux greenery, and decorative objects. Styling each shelf in groups of one, two, and three being sure to alternate is my tip to recreate this look!

Primary Suite with Blue Lace Ceiling and Neutral Bedroom Design — Modern Coastal | Interior design by Megan Molten, Charleston

The Primary Suite needed major help. We first repainted the once dark brown ceilings a pretty light blue. Blue Lace by Benjamin Moore was the perfect shade for this space. We then removed the dark wood accent wall to brighten the room up. Then bringing in an oversized neutral rug, new lighting fixtures, and bedroom furniture completed the space. Creating the perfect oasis to relax and recharge for this busy family.

Kids Bedrooms

Young Children are our toughest clients to please- they know exactly what they want. When designing a kid’s room I love to incorporate pieces such as art that they can grow up with no matter how their style evolves.

The two bedrooms in this space were attached through a Jack and Jill bathroom. Although the two rooms were connected, as one I was able to create a sense of privacy and separate spaces.

The little girl’s side of the bathroom was feminine with gold accents. We decided to paint the vanity Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore a pretty off-white to add some dimension. The fun wallpaper accent wall you will for her bedroom- this print was by a local textile designer, Emily Daws. It is the perfect mix of pretty and coastal. Completing the space with new bedroom furniture, fresh pillows, wall length mirror, and a beaded chandelier.

To continue with the separate spaces concept, the little boy’s vanity was painted dark navy. Making the space feel more masculine but still cohesive with the gold accents. In the bedroom, we did a fun Emily Daws wallpaper accent wall as well as, new furniture, lighting, a rug, and bedding.

Outdoor Space
Outdoor Space in Charleston with Seating and Dining Area — Modern Coastal | Interior design by Megan Molten, Charleston

The weather is beautiful here in Charleston almost all year round! Designing the outside area, it was crucial to the client that the outdoor space could accommodate all their friends and family. When pulling together an outdoor space, it is always important to me that the outdoors is an extension of the home. Selecting furniture that does not scream outdoors is crucial! Bringing in plenty of seating, a dining area, and faux greenery that will last refresh the porch.
