Hugh’s Sushi Party

April 13, 2023

Let the good times roll! Heavily inspired by Harry Styles’ “Music for a Sushi Restaurant,” I threw my husband, Hugh, a surprise sushi party this year for his birthday. I had a vision of black and red, all of our closest friends, and our favorite local sushi chef. In this blog post, I will share the secrets that brought my vision to life!

Welcoming your guests with a statement is the best way to begin an event – I refreshed my front console with some of Hugh’s artwork that he had held onto for years for a personal touch as well as some of my favorite candlestick holders from the Megan Molten Shop.

You can see above I sourced a live betta fish, black rocks, and faux greenery to style in our Glass Cylinder Vase. These details were just a preview of the theme, alluding to the food and decor that will be seen throughout my home.

Offering your guests a drink is a must after welcoming them in. I transformed my study into a fun bar room!

I incorporated the classic Antique Brass Wine Coolers to chill the wine and beer. As well as created a signature cocktail on the menu – the “Huey Luey,” named after the one and only.

Huey Luey Recipe

  1. 2 oz. of Gin
  2. Muddled Cucumber and Basil
  3. 1 Teaspoon of Sugar
  4. Shake with ice
  5. Top off with Soda water – Stir and Serve!

This cocktail was so fresh and delicious! The liquor and limes were all stored in my favorite tray from the shop, the Edwin Tray. The Japanese-inspired florals I arranged in the Elsa Vase.

Next to the red and gold Dragon Cocktail Napkins displayed in our classic Acrylic Cocktail Napkin Tray. I love to incorporate a cocktail menu for guests to see so they can easily select their drink of choice. Our Gold Acrylic Frame is always perfect for this.

Placed just above the bar, I hung Red Lanterns; I continued the lanterns throughout the house overflowing to the tablescape. To create a statement on my Kitchen island I styled the Darla Vase with some of our faux Cream White Cherry Blossoms and Faux Orchid Stems.

You will notice another betta fish in the vase – on the Antique Brass Etched Tray! The cake was a moment on its own, with gorgeous fish and bamboo details. I had it on display in the center of my dining table, made by one of my favorite local bakers Baked to a T. Hugh’s favorite cake – carrot cake!

I purchased all of the tabletop decor from Amazon and our shop! I have broken down every detail below to shop:

I staggered 40 red lanterns of various sizes above the tablescape. The centerpiece included Pincushion flowers and fresh greenery in our Cruz vases scattered throughout the tabletop – atop a fun Red Glitter Table Runner. The tall vases converted to aquariums with betta fish and greenery were a showstopper.

My favorite, the Smoke Wine Glass, was set at each place setting paired with a stemless water glass. For the place setting, I chose a ruby red charger and black dinner plate, topped with a Floral Red Fan and black napkin. Finally, I designed custom place cards, each tucked into the napkins. The place cards featured an orange fish graphic and a quote, “Let the good times roll!”

Our guests had such a fun time gathering and celebrating Hugh – I hope you find this guide helpful so you can plan your sushi party at home!

xx, Megan
